A Change in A School's Value System Can Help Underachievers become High Achievers
Schools can also turn underachievement around by creating a school that values education and learning and creates an atmosphere that emphasis the same. This type of positive education atmosphere will serve to encourage a gifted student to continue to be an achiever in the classroom. When the focus of a school is on education and the future opportunities students have, then students can see a value in what they are doing in the school. Siegle (2013) found in his research that “individuals within an organization will adopt the mindset that they perceive is prevalent within that organization” (p. 35). This shows that students that are in schools that value high achievement and education will help generate and create students that have that mindset, too. The school can help show students the value of an education and help break down some socioeconomic and cultural beliefs that many gifted children face by showing them how others have preserved and become highly successful adults.
