What is the purpose of this Website?
The purpose of this website is to describe the way schools contribute to underachievement in gifted students. This site offers ideas on how schools can change and help reverse underachievement in gifted students.
An underachieving gifted student is one of the most exasperating obstacles teachers, parents, and schools can experience during a school year. Parents and teachers are often baffled by the gifted student no longer living up to his/her potential. However, an underachieving gifted student is not uncommon. According to the findings of Siegle (2013), “some researchers have suggested that as high as 50% of gifted students underachieve at some point” (p. 10) which creates the need to understand, identify, and help underachievers. There is hope for those who are identified as underachievers though. If the cause of why a student is underachieving is discovered, it is possible to help a student become an achiever or high achiever again.
The video below describes some of the problems that many gifted students face when they move into gifted classrooms. Some of these problems may cause underachievement in the future for gifted students.
