How can the Traditional Set up of School Cause Underachievement?
The traditional way a school is set up may hinder a gifted student’s ability to continue to be an achiever. Many schools have a set standard of how all students will graduate from one year to the next as evidence found by Hoover-Schultz (2005) “Inflexible requirements for graduation that require students to follow a specific path from entry to graduation may also contribute to low achievement in older students” (p 47). This can cause a problem for gifted students if that is not the right path for them. Many times gifted students need to be able to advance at a quicker pace in order to be continuously faced with challenges and stimulating environments.
